Tour Description : You will meet your private guide at your hotel (or airport of Izmir) and your will start. Historically, Pergamon was the capital of a powerful Kingdom of the same name dating back to 323 BC. The Hellenistic city, situated 100 kilometers north of Izmir, was described by the famous Roman historian Pliny as being -by far the most famous city in all Asia- because even during Biblical times, Pergamon had already been a capital city for almost four hundred years and had essentially been continuously inhabited since the Stone Age. Over the course of the day, you will get to see the city’s many temples, palaces and agoras, the Asclepion, the Altar of Zeus, and the famous Pergamon Library which was said to contain about 200,000 volumes and facilitated the invention of parchment paper after an embargo was passed on Egyptian papyrus scrolls. These sites represent some of the most brilliant works of Art and architecture of the third and fourth centuries B.C. in Anatolia. The Temples of Athena, Demeter, and Dionysus are also noteworthy. You will continue to the Asclepion, an important ancient medical center devoted to the -Pergamon God of Health,- Asclepius. Indeed Pergamon was one of the three most important religious and restorative locations of the time and the birthplace of many famous medical Scholars such as Hippocrates and Galen. Last on the agenda for the day is the Red Basilica (Kizil Avlu), a still-enormous structure that sits atop the Selinus River (Bergama Cayi) and throughout its lifetime has been a Temple, Byzantine Church, and a Mosque. Afterwards you drive back to your hotel (or airport of Izmir).
