At the narrowest point of the Dardenelles, the small port city of Canakkale is at a politically strategic point which explains why the two most popular attractions nearby are military in nature. The ancient city of Troy, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, was discovered by German-American adventurer Heinrich Schliemann in the late 19th century. The hill overlooking the Aegean entry into the Dardenelles has been the site of at least 9 different historic cities, the last built during the Roman era and called Ilium.
